So, depending on who you are talking with, what you are reading, who is commentating on t.v.–there remains a debate about the status of polar bears. Some believe they are threatened as a species. Others believe that polar bears are healthier than ever. What is the truth? Who do you listen to? What should you believe?
You can certainly find information to support whatever the “belief du jour” is. However, how accurate is that information? Is it based on research, and (if so) what research conducted where and when? Lots of questions!!
Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska has her opinions on the condition of the polar bears in that state. One wonders if the fact that Alaska has a huge, vested interest in the commercial production of oil influences the information and policies about polar bears in that state. There is even a website that parodies this possible relationship.
If, however, you listen to the experts who have been studying these bears in the field…experts like biologist Dr. Andrew Derocher who know the existing research and are making valid observations…you quickly understand that the polar bears are facing an uncertain future.
So, here is a recent article, “Polar Bears face uncertain future in Arctic,” published by Margaret Munro in the Ottawa Citizen. It is about the conditions of polar bears in the Hudson Bay area. Maybe reading this will provide you with enough valid information to make your own decision about the status of polar bears today and their opportunities for sustainability in the future.
